Joy in the Midst of Suffering? Aug. 4, 2018

Joy in the Midst of Suffering? ” James 1:2 tells us, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials…” (NIV) Wait! What? Joy in the midst of suffering? My suffering put me in the pit of despair! There was absolutely no joy in my life! However, what I came to understand as the months went by, was this JOY isn’t a feeling of happiness based on my good days or bad days. Happiness is fleeting; depending on what’s happening in my life. “The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust Him with all my heart. He helps me and my heart is filled with JOY.” (Psalm 28:7 NLT) Strength,...

As I read Philippians 1:12-26, I think about Saint Paul sitting in a dark, damp, and cold prison cell writing a letter to the Philippian believers. There, in his dark prison, Paul writes and says that every bad thing that has happened to him has only helped to spread the Gospel. And for that he rejoices! His love for God and his great desire to share the Gospel was the only things that mattered to him. This imprisonment and many other sufferings Paul endured for the sake of the Gospel only solidified his conviction to share the Gospel and Jesus’ love for others. It made him bolder to...

Turning to God in all situations has been a life long journey. A journey that has changed who I am, what I believe about God and knowing Who He is through experience. Years ago, I read “When Bad Things Happen to Good People”, by Rabbi Harold Kushner. When his son died he continuously asked the question, “Why did God let my son die?” “Why?”, is a question I asked myself. In his book, Rabbi Kushner writes, “God does not cause our misfortunes. The painful things that happen to us are not punishments for our misbehavior, nor are they in any way part of some grand design on God’s part. Because...

This I know; God is Love. All love comes from God. God wants us to have what is good for us. God wants us to live abundantly. God cares for us. Then the phone rings. Or someone knocks on the door. They speak the words you don’t want to hear. In a matter of minutes your world falls apart. What do you do with this suffering that just came uninvited into your world? This suffering that brings you falling to the floor and you think you will never survive? This heavy burden that is for all intense and purpose meaningless, pointless, and with no redemptive purpose. This trial that leaves you...

Don’t Waste Your Suffering  As I read and pondered Matthew 10:18 this morning, I noticed something that I hadn’t before. God is so good to me. Isn’t it wonderful that God’s Word is alive so that every time I read it, I am given new insight into verses that I’ve read hundreds of times before. “Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves. But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. BUT, this will be your...

I read Psalm 34 this morning and it always give me great comfort and hope. “I will extol the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips. My soul will boast in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt His name together. I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him and He delivers them. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him; …but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. The eyes of the Lord are on the...
